Become a pro player
Steps to Follow:
Step 1: Cultivate Deep Motivation
If your goal is to become a professional footballer for money or fame, it’s better to keep playing for fun. It’s essential to have a genuine passion for the game, as it will help you overcome the challenges, constraints, and pressure associated with a professional career. For example, I might be less concerned about the salary if I were playing for Chelsea, as the experience of learning from the best players and playing in prestigious stadiums far outweighs any remuneration. What is your motivation?
Step 2: Practice 10,000 Hours
Recent studies show that success in any field requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Therefore, a player must train and play football for at least 10,000 hours to achieve "world-class" status, which amounts to about 3 hours a day, 20 hours a week for 10 years.
Do you want to become the next Ronaldo? Practice for 10,000 hours!
Step 3: Train Smart
Training smart is just as important, if not more so, than training hard. During team training, you follow what the coach asks of the team, but it’s crucial to focus on your development as an individual player. Every player has their own skills; that's why training alone or in small groups is essential to improve your weaknesses and strengthen your strengths. I have developed a program to help players train effectively.
Step 4: Believe in Your Potential
Criticism is inevitable: coaches will tell you that you're not good enough, you will make mistakes, and some players will bring you down. In the world of professional football, you must have unwavering confidence to overcome all negativity. This belief must come from an internal source. For me, I have always admired professional players I knew and thought, "If they can do it, so can I." I firmly believe in the formula: belief + hard (and smart) work + perseverance = success. To become a professional footballer, you must believe that you can achieve extraordinary things.
Step 5: Create a Quality Video
Nowadays, a promotional video of yourself is essential to attract attention. If you have a good video showcasing your skills, it makes it easier to get opportunities with teams. As Josep Maria Minguella, the agent who discovered Messi, said: "I discovered Leo Messi thanks to a video." With a ten-minute video shot with an HD camera, I was able to secure over $120,000 in scholarship offers and get trials with several clubs. Ask friends or family to film your training sessions and matches, ensuring the quality is optimal.
Step 6: Create a Compelling CV
Just like for a job, a football CV must describe who you are as a player in under a minute. Include a photo, your height and weight, the positions you play, your experience, links to articles about you, and your statistics. You can find more information on creating a good CV here. Additionally, the Fieldoo football network allows you to create and share an online CV. You may also consider creating your own website.
Step 7: Look for Opportunities
Now that you have the skills and tools, it’s time to showcase your talent. Here are some strategies to find opportunities:
If you're under 18, look for trials at youth academies near you.
Contact as many clubs as possible via email or phone, but don’t expect immediate responses (you may need to contact 50 clubs before getting a reply!).
Check the market on Fieldoo.com for opportunities abroad.
Consider getting represented by an agent, but be cautious, as some may be unreliable.
Some players have joined professional teams by showing up with their gear and asking to train with them.
Step 8: Give Your Best
It’s easy to focus solely on moving up to the next level instead of concentrating on your current performance. Treat each match as an opportunity to showcase your talent and give 110%, as you never know who might be watching. Build good relationships with your teammates, coaches, and club staff, as their support off the field contributes to your performance.
Tip: If you have a bad match, take the time to analyze what can be improved and work on those areas.
I knew it would be difficult, but the journey to becoming a professional footballer turned out to be harder than I imagined. Becoming a professional player doesn’t happen overnight. It requires years of dedication. When people say that success requires "blood, sweat, and tears," they are right. In the football world, no one has ever succeeded without hard work. It takes time, patience, and sometimes a bit of luck to progress. Persistence and the ability to never give up will determine your success. Step 10: Sign a Contract!
The final step to achieving your professional dreams is signing a contract with a club. It’s crucial to read every detail of the contract carefully, and if it’s your first experience, seek advice from someone experienced in the field. Be cautious in your dealings with agents and pay attention to training compensation and player ownership issues.
